Let’s be real, most people spend a majority of their day at their desk. I think it’s fair to say that proper organizational skills, as well as aesthetics, can make any work space airy, light, fun and functional. One of my biggest obsessions is “decorating” my desk. Why, because I’m extra and I like pretty things lol. Seriously though, wouldn’t you like to walk into your office smiling every day because your desk is poppin?
When people think about what I do for a living I’m sure they think my desk would be pretty basic and far from interesting. Unfortunately for them, their thinking is 100% inaccurate. My desk is bomb.
In case you’re wondering, I am an Attendance Coordinator at a Charter High School in Brooklyn, NY. I basically monitor period attendance, weekly, and monthly attendance, deal with parents, ACS etc. Interesting stuff eh? Okay maybe not, but the best part of my job is the constant harassment and check ins I receive from the kids. Daé Daé loves the kids – they literally make my day.
So, how can you recreate your work space, follow your zen and have the best looking desk at the office? Check out these 5 awesome tips below!
Organization is your homie
A sense of order can definitely boost your desk functionality. A clean tidy work space tends to make you feel more purposeful, plus it’s much easier to find things. I mean honestly, who has time to thoroughly search for a couple of posts its?
Keep What You Need As Close As Possible
I know some of you may roll your eyes or shrug your shoulders while reading this suggestion because this doesn’t seem like a big deal, but the moment you’re in desperate need for an item that you can’t find, you’ll think back to this moment. Before I got my Ish together and learned how to organize my life, I used to spend way too much time searching for something as simple as an eraser. I learned that having everything in a specific place makes locating items 100 times easier. Plus, it looks amazing! You can find simple cute desk organizers at Target, Homegoods (which is my absolute favorite) or Staples.
Folders and Files
Don’t let files stack up on your desk and clutter your space – that’s a hot mess. There are plenty of methods you can utilize to have your desk scream “I’m hella organized”. Hanging files or file organizers tend to do the trick. You can also use the racks that store files horizontally. By labeling each file folder you’ll know exactly where to find your important documents.
Hang Prints or Pictures
Now, the fun begins! Having pictures or other decorative hanging items around always adds a bit of spice to a bland work space. Surrounding yourself with positive affirmations or people you love will always heighten your mood. This allows you to have fun and show off a bit of your personality. Adding cool art will make your space feel “homey”. If push pins and tape aren’t really your thing, you can dress up your wall art with an inexpensive frame.
If you’re plagued with that dreaded gray cubicle divider hang fabric or inexpensive wallpaper will be your best friend. I encourage you to pair the two, and experiment with your space!
Add some color to your space
For the most part, the color scheme in most offices is fairly the same. Issa Vibe… a dreary, downcast sort of vibe. Be the difference in your office people! Run away from the humdrum feel and introduce color to your space!
Add a flower or a plant
Green thumb anyone? Low maintenance plants make for excellent desk top mates. Succulents seem to be very popular this year, combining an easy watering plant and an awesome vase can help give your desk the extra oomph it needs! If you’re into flowers seasonal flower arrangements will stay lively for at least a week. You can also dry them to help them last longer. Your cubicle or desk will smell amazing and the color boost to your space would be hard to miss. In this case, that’s a good thing.
Now that you have the tools to create a fun and creative work space, I’ll share mine with you guys!
The three books I swear by. That good ol planner, agenda, and note book. The key to being successfully organized is having all events or to do lists in one place. Planners with calendars and a note section are the wave. I purchased this planner at HomeGoods.
I’m currently in the process of swapping out my 2016-17 folders and creating 2017-18 folders hence the lack of labels.
PS. You can never have too many sectionals!
Remember when we spoke about positive affirmations? Instead of printing out positive words I used the letters the kids randomly give me, as well as birthday cards.
